The entry level Foundation Licence training is an introduction to Amateur Radio. There is no requirement for any background in radio or electronics. The course should take approximately 8 hours to complete over a period of up to 2 months based on 1-2 hours on a Friday evening.
If you have any relevant knowledge the course can be tailored to meet your skills. At the Foundation Level you are not expected to come away with an in depth knowledge but sufficient to “get you going” and build on the knowledge with the Intermediate and Full courses.
Practical assessments were dropped from the syllabus in 2021. Shirehampton club will still provide these in order for students to become more familiar with operating practices and procedures and the use of equipment. We will provide you with the opportunity to use the clubs equipment and give you the experience you need to get “on the air”.
The examination on completion of the courses consists of a multiple choice paper with 26 questions with 1 hour to answer them. Examination fees can be paid online here https://rsgb.org/main/clubs-training/for-students/paying-for-your-exam/. The club will book the examination papers as there may be multiple pupils taking examinations at the same time.
Courses are run on demand. there is no schedule.
If you have not already joined the RSGB you should investigate this as they provide a lot of facilities including a monthly magazine and a bookshop. Membership to those under the age of 21 is free.
Foundation Courses are taught by Clive, G4NAQ and John, G4DVV.
Next is the Intermediate Course.
